New York University Admission Requirements

New York University Admission Requirements

Ever since you recognized your entrepreneurial potential, you may have developed a strong desire to attend the Stern School of Business or perhaps it’s your passion for dance that encourages you to apply to the Tisch School of Arts. Both are globally recognized schools at the New York University (NYU).

However, just saying that you want to go to NYU won’t impress the admissions officers there. You should mention your passions, while also proving why you’re a perfect fit for one of the academic programs at this world class institution.

To help you out, we’ve compiled comprehensive admission requirements for NYU, the most important elements of which include:

  • Past academic record
  • Performance on standardized test (Either SAT or ACT)
  • Requirements specific to the application

Before going into detailed admission requirements, let’s study some basics about the institution:

About NYU

Founded in 1831, NYU is a private institution that features a semester-based academic calendar. In fall 2020, the university had 27,444 undergraduate enrollments in total. With its primary campus situated in Greenwich, Manhattan, NYU is truly a city-based institution fully exposed to the streets of the Big Apple.

While the university offers guaranteed housing for students throughout their stay at NYU, most students from the senior classes choose to move to apartments in New York City. You have over 300 student organizations and clubs to join. Among them, the WNYU is a highly popular student radio station that broadcasts on a local FM channel and streams online for the university community.

Among the colleges and programs at NYU include The College of Arts and Sciences (the largest); Tisch School of Arts; Gallatin School of individualized Study; Tandon School of Engineering; Liberal Studies; Stern School of Business; Meyers College of Nursing; and Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

Notable Alumni of NYU include Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook), Morgan Freeman (the famous actor), Angelina Jolie (Famous actress), Anne Hathaway (Famous Actress), and tons of other artists.

NYU GPA Requirements

To seriously be considered for admissions, you’ll need to apply to NYU with an unweighted GPA of 3.7 or higher. This means your high school transcript should contain mostly A’s and A-‘s. If your high school GPA is lower than 3.7, try to achieve a higher than average SAT or ACT score to make up for that. Your portfolio may also help when applying to Steinhardt or Tisch.

NYU SAT Requirements

With NYU’s acceptance rate falling to 12%, you can’t expect to secure a place with just any SAT score. The average SAT score for admitted students for the Class of 2025 was a staggering 1540. To even be considered competitive with other applicants, you’ll need to score at least 1500. SAT Tutoring is a good way to exceed or hit that average.

NYU ACT Requirements

Like in the case of SAT, NYU’s average ACT score continues to rise to record levels. For the last intake, the average ACT at NYU was 33. While ACT is not required to submit your application, you’ll face a hard time getting in with anything below 29 or no submission at all. To achieve a competitive score, seek ACT tutoring without any delay.

How to Apply to NYU

When considering applying to NYU, you should know the key dates. For Early Decision I, you’ll need to apply by November, 1. For Early Decision II or Regular Decision, you must apply by January, 1.  The application requirements include:

  • Personal Statement of 650 words
  • NYU-specific essay
  • School report
  • Mid-year Report
  • Official High school transcript
  • Letters of recommendation from academic teachers
  • Counselor recommendation
  • SAT or ACT

Now that you’ve understood the admission requirements for NYU, it’s time to begin preparing your application. We recommend spending enough time preparing for the SAT or ACT test.
