Anti-Bullying Initiative Gets Boost from the House

With the advent of "cyber bullying", schools have been dealing with a frightening rise in bullying through social media channels that are popular with teens, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Parents just need to turn on the evening news to see the latest victims of bullying. And the severity with which bullying takes place in schools seems significantly higher than in years past. That is why so many schools have implemented bullying prevention programs to help educate teachers and staff on recognizing and responding to bullying, and to help families and students recognize and stop bullying before it escalates. However, legislation enacted this week may make educational dollars available to schools for anti-bullying measures, including education, prevention, and training.   School budgets are strained, and funding for these crucial training activities is limited. That is why it is particularly exciting to hear that the House of Representatives intends to back anti-bullying grant funding for local schools. The H.R. 6019 bill would authorize funding of $40 million dollars per year, over the next five years, to help fund bullying prevention and intervention programs. The bill would also focus on school safety provisions such as gang prevention.   For resources for your students, and additional information on bullying prevention and intervention, check out the Bullying Prevention Resource Guide or the StopBullying.gov web site.
